Money in the Bank: How to Get It Out!

We have all been there: the day before payday and not a penny in our pocket. We know our wages will come tomorrow, but if we could just get our hands on a couple of pounds right now, it would make our last hours of poverty so much easier.

Banks like money, and nine times out of ten they will hold out as long as they can before letting you get your hands on yours. As you know, your wages are paid into your account about a week before payday with instructions from your employer not to actually release the cash before the due date. So why can't banks for once allow us to withdraw a little beforehand? They do know that we are good for it, after all.

I live in the UK and recently changed banks for a better deal. I soon realised that I'd made a mistake. That's because at my old bank, my wages would appear in my account at the stroke of midnight; however, with my new account, I have to wait until 2:30 a.m. for my money to be made available. I decided to find out more about this difference, so this article is a result of my research.

Banks process their accounts at different times during the night, and depending on who you bank with, you can get ahold of your money sooner or later than others.

What Time Does Your Money Go Into Your Bank Account?

Nat West, Barclay's, Clydesdale, Bank of Scotland, Bank of England, and Santander, to name but a few, are some of the biggest banks in the UK, but when do they update your account and release your funds for withdrawal?

Some banks are actually pretty good and allow you to withdraw your money before midnight by depositing money into your account around 11:30 p.m. Other banks will release your funds at midnight or just a few minutes afterwards. Some banks (like mine) make you wait until between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m., and others will not let you touch your money until at least 6:00 a.m. on payday.

For example, Clydesdale Bank in Scotland releases your funds at 11:30 p.m. the night before payday, while the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) waits until 6:00 a.m. to release your money.

When UK Banks Make Deposits Available

Weekend and Holiday Bank Deposits

Normally, if your money is due to be released on a bank holiday, you will be able to gain access to it starting the Friday before.
If your payday is a Saturday, most banks will release your funds on Friday or on Saturday morning.
If your payday is a Sunday, most banks will release your funds early. Some will release them on the Friday before, whereas others will wait until Saturday.
If your payday is a Monday, many banks will release your funds on Saturday.

When Will My PayPal Deposit Be Available?

If you are paid through PayPal, they now operate a faster payment service, which means you should have your money in your hands two hours or less after you transfer your PayPal funds to your bank account.

This info is incorrect, I'm with Santander and my money paid by bacs clears as early as 9pm the evening before it is due, sometimes it has been a bit later but generally its between 9pm and 11pm, usually earlier than later.

Barclays- Monday's benefit money always goes in Friday night and is in by 0.02am

Lloyd's don't pay early at all and it can be as late as 1am

Tsb money is in by five past twelve

Pls note that if your expecting money in your Barclays account if it's not in Saturday there's no point checking Monday as they don't do a Sunday night payment they miss Saturday/Sunday night

Monzo seems to be the best account at the min is your due a payment on say Wednesday you can access it the day before at 4.30pm. Monday's money is available on a Friday at 4.30pm

EACH BANK has an alocated time to do what is called a batch update, the RBS IS 2.05am till 2.20am during this time you will not be able to use the RBS ONLINE as its at that time they do a batch update, then at 2.30 am another bank does a batch update for 20 minutes its not because they like to hold on to money, its the computer only able to handle this amount. dont forget this is a complicated batch update that contacts every persons bank account all over the world, hence why a bank clearing centre is used, your bank sends the money there and it allows a certain time for that to update your bank.

After waiting all day for my ESA payment to go into my account, I thought I'd help others waiting for their money to be available for withdrawal.

Went in at 02.52.

This doesn't mean other Tesco Bank customers will be paid at this time though, when I rang customer services about another matter and being asked if there was anything else they could help with, I asked about payment times and was told 'anytime between 2-3am.

Halifax bank have been good for the most part my money has always landed between 12:00-1:00 am with both benefits and bacs payments . On the rare occasion it will not be in by 1:00 & I find my self tossing and turning and checking every 20 minutes until either I fall asleep or it goes in! Banks in the UK seem to have no exact time , but if I had to vote Halifax would win . ( Halifax is under Lloyd's tsb) so assuming that bank too. There is an off chance that banks just don't have exact times & just process money whenever they do at the late hours they assume us all to be asleep ! When really we need to know if our money is safe before falling asleep!

It's more complicated than this, it also has something to do with your employer and either how, when or by using what method they transfer your wages to the bank as two different jobs' pay will arrive at different times to the same bank account.

I'm with nationwide and get paid at about 12.20am, not 2-3am as your research found. My friend in his old job would get paid bang on 12.00 on the dot, but in his new job, and the same bank account now doesn't get his cash until closer to 3am...

Bank of Scotland ESA benefit - my ESA benefit went in between 3am & 4am, i stayed up till 1am no joy, got up again just before 3am still nothing, checked again @ 4am was in, hope this helps someone. Seems the banks are a law unto themselves as there is no clear time frame for money going in or customers able to know specifics which will not be for a lack of people asking. Some people need to know money is in the early hours to prepare for the next day or maybe go to a supermarket in the early hours for something to eat as DWP benefit does NOT keep you going properly and for most runs out long before next payment day.
